Numerous leisure and outdoor activities are possible in the Cévennes : hiking, biking, canyoning, river rafting, via ferrata (secure rock wall climbing trail), climbing parks and swimming.
The 2 distributaries of the Gardon river are near the Château de Péras, one in Saint Jean du Gard and the other in Mialet. Swimming is possible for at least 3 months out of the year at several wonderful swimming holes and spots along these waterways. Fishing is popular especially in the smaller streams where river tout is highly prized.
At several of the seasonal markets, you can find regional specialities for sale by local producers. Organic and sustainable agriculture is the norm here in the Cévennes.
The Château du Péras is located near the Parc National des Cévennes where several hamlets have been renovated according to traditional methods. The landscapes are remarkably diverse and of exceptional beauty.
This land is to be visited through its culture and history, not just by viewing its scenery. You must dare to explore it, tour the roman style chapels, medieval castles, experience the transhumances (the seasonal migration of livestock between lowlands and adjacent mountains), or hike along the Corniche des Cévennes to view its splendid panoramas. There is also terraced agriculture which is so unique to only this region which has left its mark during the height of the the silkworm production. There are also numerous dolmens on the « sacred mountain », chalk ovens, fortified farms, watermills and many more treasures to be discovered which are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Program.
